Documentation Sri Lanka and the art of the Samurai: Ashen Shiriwardana and his journey: Sri Lanka, a paradisiacal country in the Indian Ocean, lies over 8,000 kilometres from Germany, directly below India. Only an hour’s flight separates it from the dreamlike Maldives. In the midst of this breathtaking backdrop, a fascinating cultural event takes place that makes the hearts of martial arts enthusiasts beat faster: the Samurai Camp. Ashen Shiriwardana, a talented 2nd Dan holder in Shodokan karate, has passionately dedicated himself to the traditions of the Japanese samurai. His fascination for this historical martial art is not only evident in his training, but also in his work as an actor, where he has already appeared in several films.

These diverse interests led him to participate in the first Samurai Camp in May 2024 in Ragama, Sri Lanka, organised by Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido. Samurai martial arts is far more than just technique; it embodies a profound connection between sword school, tradition and philosophy of life – that which defines the soul of the samurai. Ashen is inspired by this diversity and has decided to capture his experiences and insights from both samurai camps (samurai camp in December 2024) in a 30-minute documentary. Since 2023, Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido has established a permanent base in Sri Lanka, where regular training sessions take place. Grandmaster Christian Wiederanders from Germany is often on site and contributes his extensive knowledge and experience. The passion and commitment expressed in these training sessions are impressive and create a strong community. The anticipation for the upcoming 3rd Samurai Camp in March 2025 is growing steadily, and once again three different locations in Sri Lanka will provide the stage for this unique blend of martial arts and culture. The documentary that Ashen has created is not only a visual experience, but also a tribute to the unvarnished reality and profound traditions of the samurai, presented in Singalese, the local language. A heartfelt thank you for this wonderful documentary that brings us closer to Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido – a fascinating journey that enriches both mind and body and reminds us of the importance of preserving and passing on traditions.
