Sunday, 19 April 2026 marked the launch of the reorientation of Buki Jutsu within Tatsu Ryu Bushido. Under the guidance of Sensei Timo Gartner, participants were given a first ‘taster’ of the revised training methodology for wooden weapons. However, this is not entirely new, as these were, in part, standard practices until early 2012. The focus was on the long staff (Bo). Following an intensive warm-up phase, during which the Bo was used as an effective training tool for mobilisation and releasing tension, the basic training began. For over an hour and a half, the participants honed the fundamentals of movement – for only those who have mastered their bodies can wield a heavy weapon safely. In the subsequent partner exercises, “constant movement” was the watchword: the Bo was not swung statically, but flowed dynamically from the footwork. To round off the session, Sensei Timo and Sensei Thorsten demonstrated controlled sparring with referee Saiko-Shihan Christian Wiederanders, consisting of three 90-second rounds in protective gear (final score 6:5), before the students themselves were given the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience in guided free-sparring rounds with the trainers. A truly successful training day, which will be repeated soon!
