On Sunday, 29 June 2025, a new round of training courses for assistant trainers began at Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido Limburgerhof under the umbrella of the Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido Academy. At the same time, this was also the last learning unit for some participants who had already attended the remaining seminars in 2024 and are now about to take their teaching test. From the perspective of Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido, it would be good if a trainer qualification were generally mandatory in sports in order to offer age-appropriate training that meets quality standards. However, this is not a requirement in Germany. Anyone who wants to work as an assistant, instructor or trainer at Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido must meet clear requirements that go beyond pure martial arts training. For decades, they have been based on the minimum standards of the DOSB – German Olympic Sports Confederation. In order to ensure the high quality standard of our training and to guarantee the professionalism of our instructors, additional qualifications are essential. After all, a black belt does not necessarily make a good trainer. As part of the qualification process for the various licences from E to A, various fundamental topics are covered that are of great importance for the role of a trainer: Anatomy: A deep understanding of human anatomy is crucial for preventing injuries and designing effective training sessions. Didactics and methodology: Knowing how to convey content effectively and take different learning styles into account is essential for every trainer. Here, participants learn how to structure their knowledge and present it in a targeted manner. Learning: The fundamentals of psychological aspects of learning are discussed in order to provide the best possible support for trainees in their progress and development. Insurance law: A comprehensive understanding of the legal framework and insurance coverage protects not only the trainers but also the participants. The Trainer D licence comprises training with a final examination and a teaching demonstration consisting of 60 learning units. The course leader is Christian Wiederanders, who has not only been a national and international speaker for decades, but also holds the DOSB trainer certificate for training trainers and instructors as well as the IHK trainer certificate and ‘Train the Trainer’ certificate. In addition to theory, training in Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido also requires practical evidence: Extended certificate of good conduct: Regular presentation of an extended certificate of good conduct is necessary to gain the trust of participants and ensure a safe training environment. Code of honour: Trainers sign a code of honour, similar to that of the DOSB and German sports associations, which sets out the ethical standards and behaviour within the community. First aid qualification: Thorough first aid training is mandatory in order to be able to react quickly and appropriately in emergencies. Internships: Practical experience is essential in order to put the theories learned into practice and to continuously improve one’s own skills. In order to meet all these requirements, we offer regular training blocks that are specifically tailored to the needs of the registered participants. In these modules, participants not only gain the necessary knowledge, but also have the opportunity to actively exchange ideas and learn from each other. Through this comprehensive training in Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido, we ensure that our trainers are not only technically proficient, but also pedagogically competent, which benefits everyone involved. We would like to set an example for strong volunteer work with high quality standards.
