🇬🇧 First Cherry Blossoms awarded under the new grading system
TATSU-RYU-BUSHIDO.com | Samstag, Okt. 03

A new grading system came into force at Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido on Wednesday, 1 October 2026. The very evening before, the first new grades were awarded at the Carl-Bosch-Halle in Limburgerhof, and the corresponding certificates were presented. Soke Christian Wiederanders appointed Fabian Birkle, Martin Paetz and Tim Ott as Shidoin. As coaches and licensed instructors, they will henceforth wear two cherry blossoms. In addition, Ute Kreischer, Angela Walter, Lance Kaleta, Christian Grünert and Julia Arz were appointed as Joshu. This title denotes training leaders and assistants to the Shidoin. They will henceforth be recognisable by a single cherry blossom above the Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido logo. With the introduction of the new title system, training, responsibility and commitment within Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido are visibly recognised. Those who have received their certificates may now wear their cherry blossoms with pride.

In Tatsu-Ryu Bushido, rank badges denote specific responsibilities, qualifications and duties within the training programme. The official 2027 rank hierarchy is structured as the ‘cherry blossom hierarchy’ and comprises six levels: Senpai, Jōshu, Shidōin, Sensei, Shihan and Sōke. Each level is represented by a corresponding number of white cherry blossoms above the coat of arms. The exception is the Senpai, who has a red cherry blossom above the coat of arms. Jōshu bears one cherry blossom and denotes a training leader or assistant to the Shidōin. Shidōin bears two cherry blossoms and represents a coach or licensed instructor. Sensei bears three cherry blossoms and denotes a teacher with responsibility for dojo coordination. Shihan bears four cherry blossoms and represents a master trainer or master instructor. Sōke bears five cherry blossoms and denotes the head of the Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido style.

Seito-ho (生徒補) refers to a junior pupil within the children’s system or a prospective pupil below 8th Kyu. Seito (生徒) is the general term for a pupil and is deliberately used instead of Deshi (弟子), which traditionally refers to a master’s direct pupil. This title may be held up to 2nd Dan. Our trainers, who hold a cross-disciplinary coaching qualification in accordance with the Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido training concept for trainers, are identified in Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido by cherry blossoms above the logo. They combine specialist training, coaching qualifications (except for the rank of Senpai), personal maturity, reliability and a willingness to take responsibility for pupils, lessons and tradition. This ensures that the ranking system remains straightforward, true to tradition and, at the same time, clearly focused on the tasks and responsibilities within modern Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido. The appointment is marked by a badge on the uniform and a certificate.

  • Senpai (先輩) – 1 red cherry blossom denotes an experienced student who is selected and recognised by the dojo head. They act as the link between students and instructors. On behalf of the instructor, they supervise training sessions when the instructor is absent and assist with demonstrating techniques. Valid from the date of appointment until revoked by the dojo leader or until appointment as Jōshu, Shidōin or Sensei!
  • Jōshu (助手) – 1 white cherry blossom denotes a supporting, licensed training assistant role within training sessions, held by a practitioner with a grade between 2nd Kyu (brown) and 2nd Dan (black). A Jōshu assists the Shidōin or Sensei in conducting exercises, supports beginners and undertakes simple organisational or practical tasks during training. The title signifies helpfulness, reliability and the first visible step towards training and leadership responsibilities. A minimum of a D-level coaching qualification is required for appointment. Valid upon appointment, for as long as a valid coaching licence is held!
  • Shidōin (指導員) – 2 white cherry blossoms denotes a licensed trainer in Tatsu-Ryu Bushido with a grade between 2nd Kyu (brown) and 2nd Dan (black). A Shidōin may lead training sessions, deliver training content and support students within the prescribed framework. The title signifies a sound technical foundation, an understanding of teaching methodology and the ability to conduct training safely, in an orderly manner and responsibly. A minimum of a D-level coaching qualification is required for appointment. Valid following appointment, provided a valid coaching licence is held!
  • Sensei (先生) – 3 white cherry blossoms refers to a teacher holding the 3rd or 4th Dan who, beyond mere instruction, assumes responsibility for training, development and guidance within a dōjō or training area. A Sensei imparts not only technique, but also attitude, values, discipline and an understanding of the path of Tatsu-Ryu Bushido. The title signifies pedagogical maturity, the ability to serve as a role model and the provision of ongoing support to students. A minimum of a C-level coaching qualification is required for appointment. Validity following appointment is indefinite!
  • Shihan (師範) – 4 white cherry blossoms denotes a master instructor or master coach holding at least 5th Dan, with exceptional experience and overarching responsibility. A Shihan shapes training, quality assurance and the further development of teaching, and is able to provide professional guidance to instructors and advanced students. The title signifies deep understanding, many years of practice, a high degree of personal maturity and the ability to credibly pass on tradition and methodology. A minimum of a B-level coaching qualification is required for appointment. The title is valid indefinitely once awarded!
  • Sōke (宗家) – 5 white cherry blossoms denotes the head of the style and the Grand Master of Tatsu-Ryu Bushido. The Sōke bears the ultimate responsibility for the origins, direction, preservation and further development of the system. The title represents not merely a rank, but a central responsibility towards the tradition, teachings, values and future of Tatsu-Ryu Bushido.
