On Sunday, 9 February 2025, the first self-protection for women basic course 1+2 took place this year in Limburgerhof. The first basic self-protection course for women started a year ago and was deepened over the course of the last year in many training sessions. The new basic course was fully booked before it started. The team of instructors put together for this course not only has decades of martial arts experience, such as Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido, but has also developed further on current topics such as self-protection. Self-protection is a more holistic approach to dealing with conflict situations than self-assertion and self-defence. While self-defence only deals with the actual physical conflict, self-protection starts earlier, in prevention, and also deals significantly with the psychological aspect. The instructors were Timo Gartner and Thorsten Klein. Timo designed the course according to training methods that he was taught by Jim Wagner’s Reality Based System, so that it was less about isolated technical applications (if the attacker does this, then you do that…) and more about vigilance and observation in prevention, the correct recognition of dangerous situations and the application in scenarios. The tactical pen was used as a useful tool for defence. Always remain capable of acting! Of course, always prioritising maximum safety through control and protective equipment and yet realistic pressure. Women no longer dare to go out on the street alone, and the number of cases of domestic violence against women and children is rising. One of the alarming figures is that several gang rapes take place every day. You can be against something and mobilise people, or you can actively do something about it. It is therefore a duty to do something for women and children. Self-defence items, as we know them from the general public, were discussed and analysed in detail, which make sense and which don’t, how to use them, etc. Among other things, a situation with fake blood was simulated to illustrate the confusion in an emergency. It was also emphasised here not to expose oneself to unnecessary danger and to get to safety quickly. Based on the ‘very’ positive feedback, we will offer follow-up courses if necessary, combined with a weekly programme. Dates for self-protection for women can be found at www.selbstschutz-frauen.de
