After Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido Mutterstadt e.V. attracted attention at the fantastic carnival parade, the dojo in the Rundsporthalle opened its doors for an open training session on 24 February 2026. There, participants were able to experience a very special kind of challenge. The theme: sensory training through deprivation. The most important tool of the day was neither sword nor stick, but the blindfold. In the modern world, we rely on our visual perception for over 80% of our senses. But what happens when this dominant sense is suddenly taken away? For the martial artists of Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido, the darkness opened up a whole new field of experience. Similarly, a samurai must be able to perceive his surroundings through all his available senses. The aim of the training was to sharpen kinesthetic perception and hearing. Without sight, the participants had to rely on the rustling of a suit, changes in air flow or the mere sense of distance. This form of perception enhancement through movement is only one component of our training to develop mental strength and concentration. Training with blindfolds is much more than a gimmick. It teaches us:
- Intuition: Trust in your own reflexes when you lack the time to analyse with your eyes.
- Balance: The inner ear and proprioception take the lead.
- Presence: Absolute mindfulness in the here and now, as any distraction leads to contact.
This approach reflects the seven virtues of Tatsu-Ryu Bushido – in particular, the courage to face the unknown and self-control in stressful situations.
We would like to thank all participants for their trust and openness. Anyone who would like to experience this special form of martial arts and health for themselves can register for a free trial membership at any time and drop by the Rundsporthalle on Tuesdays from 7 p.m.
