The capital of Sri Lanka was previously only known from the airport, or briefly on Monday, when the tatami mats were purchased. That’s why we wanted to squeeze in a day in Colombo with an overnight stay. Situated directly by the sea, we checked into our rooms and inspected the rooftop lounge. A swimming pool directly on the roof of the 13-storey hotel with a view of the sea and Colombo. We then explored Colombo by tuk-tuk. The tuk-tuk driver was kind enough to show us all the sights and wait while we visited them. We started with the largest Buddha temple in Sri Lanka. This temple is two separate temples, almost next to each other. The first temple was already very large, with countless Buddha statues of all sizes as far as you could see. It was sometimes difficult not to turn your back to a Buddha, as turning your back to a Buddha statue is considered blasphemy. Although the second temple was much smaller, it was surrounded by water on all sides. A temple that is used more for meditation. With the modern skyscrapers of the capital in the background, the temple made a unique and special impression. We then travelled to Independence Square. When Sri Lanka gained independence from England on 4 February 1948 through Don Stephen Senanayake, a statue was dedicated to the ‘Father of the Nation’ on the square. We then drove past government buildings to a very hidden Hindu temple. It was very colourful and decorated with countless brightly painted Hindu figures. Not far away was the Lotus Tower, which at 351.5 metres is the tallest tower in South Asia. After passing the red temple, we headed to the lighthouse, which is no longer in active use but is also a Sri Lankan landmark. The tower is painted differently from different sides. We then headed back to the hotel with a quick dip in the rooftop pool to admire the sunset. Unfortunately, shortly before the end, the clouds had something against it. What a pity. After dinner at the hotel, we ended the evening in a beach bar right by the sea.
