On Saturday, 14 June 2025, the scenario training course for the Tatsu-Ryu self-defence concept took place on the grounds of the Rödersheim Gronau German Shepherd Dog Club, under the patronage of Christian Wiederanders from Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido. After Thomas Breunig, the club chairman, had let us in, the final preparations began immediately. We had already secured edges and window sills the day before to minimise the risk of injury. The course for 12 participants was led by Timo Gartner, assisted by Thorsten Klein and accompanied by our two attackers, Andreas Gössel and Michael Somavilla, who did a wonderful job. We have great respect for the participants. In the safety zone outside the clubhouse, the temperature was 34°C, while the clubhouse itself was dark and cool. That alone was exhausting. In addition, Timo dynamically increased the stress level of the participants (and the attackers). Some scenarios were ‘easy’ and served to aid understanding. Others, which involved fake knives or alarm guns, provided a significant adrenaline rush. But credit where credit is due: the concepts of this course are inspired by Jim Wagner’s Reality Based Personal Protection System. Many thanks for your teachings, Jim, be a hard target! After eight hours, everyone was exhausted and at the end of their mental and physical resources, and we were able to round off a successful and exciting day with a barbecue and some reflection.
