On 26 October, an impressive Diwali festival organised by the cultural association Bharat Vasi Germany e.V. took place in Mainz. Amidst the festive atmosphere and bright lights, numerous diyas (oil lamps) illuminated the venue, while visitors were dressed in traditional Indian robes. A small delegation from Tatsu-Ryu-Bushido also travelled to the event. The Diwali festival, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an important multi-day festival in Hinduism that is celebrated in various countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and in the Indian diaspora worldwide. It symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, which is reflected in the joyful celebrations and gatherings of family and friends. Diwali can be compared to Christmas in terms of its religious and social significance, while the festive night is reminiscent of New Year’s Eve. The varied programme included dance performances, musical contributions and workshops in which participants could learn the art of rangoli (colourful patterns created from coloured powder). The aroma of traditional Indian food filled the air, tempting guests with delicious dishes such as samosas, paneer tikka and various curries. All of this contributed to the festive atmosphere and created a sense of community. Overall, the Diwali festival in Mainz was a successful event that celebrated cultural diversity and highlighted the values of friendship, love and solidarity.
